Thank you for your interest in viola lessons at the Kansas City School of Music! The viola has a long and rich history, providing access to a wide variety of rewarding and expressive music. Contrary to popular belief, the viola is actually harder to play than the violin, but the richer, darker sound it produces offers its own rewards. Although it has historically played “second fiddle” to its smaller sibling, the violin, there are many incredible works of art written for the viola by famous composers such as Bartok, Britten, Vaughan Willams and Shostakovich.
As such, our viola instructor takes care to provide each student with a diverse range of repertoire, no matter their skill-level or age. We work to create a solid music foundation in each student’s life, allowing them to explore their creativity and talents with each and every lesson. At Kansas City School of Music, our students don’t just play the viola; they excel

Performance Opportunities
Performances are a great opportunity for students to test everything they’ve learned in lessons. At Kansas City School of Music, we have ample opportunities for violin students to perform on their instrument. For string instruments, we also offer string quartets and chamber orchestras. In addition to activities within the Kansas City School of Music, students are encouraged to pursue other opportunities to perform, such as District and State Band/Orchestra, District and State Solo & Ensemble Festival, and the Youth Symphony of Kansas City.
Exceptional Facilities
The quality of facility won’t make or break a student’s ability to learn an instrument, but it can certainly make it more enjoyable. At Kansas City School of Music, our Overland Park campus is conveniently located. The facility has soundproof walls and temperature control, as well as pianos for accompaniment purposes. Our state-of-the-art facilities are just a small part of our standards of excellence.
Parental Involvement
We offer viola lessons to students of all ages. However, if you are enrolling your son or daughter in one of our music programs, we allow and encourage parental involvement. If they are in preschool or elementary school, we require parents to sit in on lessons in order to make them more productive due to how crucial this stage of musicianship is for your child. Be sure to speak with us about how you can get involved in your child’s music education.
Our highest priority at Kansas City School of Music is to provide you or your child with quality music education in a welcoming and productive environment. Don’t hesitate to speak with us if you have any questions about our viola lessons.
